I want to talk with you today about what the Bible calls the Gog of Magog War, that I believe is coming soon. And let me say right off, that the passages we will be looking at in Ezekiel 38 about this coming war, are some of the most difficult prophetic passages in the entire word of God. And friends, because of this, I’ll try my best to be as objective as possible, however, I do believe that at least some “educated speculation”, is at times necessary, due to the fact that things yet future don’t allow anyone to be dogmatic or definitive. Having said that, I will try to be as scripturally sound as possible.
Now friends, one thing to keep in mind as we study this great prophecy is that chapter 34 marks a very important turning point in the book of Ezekiel, because up until then the Prophet had been prophesying about the captivity of Jerusalem and about God’s judgment and the coming Babylonian captivity and exile. But then we see a dramatic turn after chapter 34 to a message of future restoration and hope for Jerusalem. And in chapters 37 thru 39, Ezekiel begins to describe a future time when God would restore the nation Israel again and a future event called the Gog of Magog War.
Folks, we know from history that as promised, after almost 2,000 years, God miraculously restored the nation Israel on May 14, 1948, and friends I believe that’s when God’s prophetic clock began ticking again, so it really shouldn’t be surprising that today we’re hearing a lot about the Gog and Magog War, because for the first time in history, the stage is now set; all the actors are in place and they are in the exact geographical area today that was predicted by Ezekiel the Prophet in chapters 38 and 39 over 2600 years ago.
And folks, if you look at current events through the lens of Bible prophecy, you may have seen on the evening news, that in Syria (which is directly above Israel) many of the key actors in the Gog of Magog war – Russia, Iran and Turkey are there right now and they are intent on building nuclear weapons and missiles in order to attack the nation of Israel. And folks, Israel has already destroyed a missile site in Damascus and has vowed that they will never allow a nuclear weapons site in the hands of an avowed enemy so close to their border. So as you can see, Syria is right now a powder keg just waiting to erupt into a nuclear war at any time! Now over the centuries, many critics have scoffed saying: “there’s just no way that this war can happen because these nations have never been allied together in this way before”, but friends today, as never before, it’s not only possible, it’s an actual reality.
So let’s look at what the Bible tells us about this coming war and if you want to follow along with me, turn to Ezekiel chapter 38 and here Ezekiel gives us an amazing list of names of nations that are key players in the last days war called Gog Of Magog. So let’s read verses 1 thru 6: “ And the word of the Lord came to me saying, Son of man, set your face against Gog in the land of Magog, the chief Prince of Meshach and Tubal ad prophecy against him saying, thus says the Lord God; behold, I am against you, oh Gog chief Prince of Meshach and Tubal: and I will turn you back, and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you forth, and all your armies and horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armor, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet. Gomer and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the North quarters in all his bands, and many people with them” (Ezekiel38:1-6)
Now as you can see, Ezekiel identifies the nations in the Gog of Magog alliance as Magog, Rosh, Meshach, Tubal, Persia, Cush, Put, Gomer and Beth-Togarmah. Now I don’t blame you if most, if not all of these names don’t make much sense to you, but that doesn’t mean Ezekiel’s not pointing to our time and our generation today. Keep in mind, that he’s naming the nations of this alliance as they were known in his day, but what we need to understand is that nations and cities and geographical boundaries have changed over the centuries. And folks, what we know today,(and I’ll not be dogmatic here) is that history gives us a pretty accurate idea about who they are, where they are, what they’re called and their current geographical location in modern times.
Now folks, one of the most astounding things to notice is that many of these names here in Ezekiel, came from Genesis chapter 10 and they are actual descendants of Noah, and his three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth. If you remember, after the flood, Noah and his wife and three sons were the only human survivors, and so, naturally, they began to have children and their children had children and so on, and they began to re-populate the earth again and they formed various tribes and clans that began migrating to other territories and settle in villages and cities all over the known world. And what many don’t realize is that the present nations we see in the world today, they all originally descended from Shem, Ham or Japheth and the line of Noah. And in Ezekiel’s day, the nations and tribes were known by the names listed above.
So if we go back to the future thru the lens of Bible prophecy, today, for example, Magog is not called Magog, Persia is not called Persia, and Meshech and Tubal and the rest all have different names today, because they are called by their modern names. Why? Because names of cities and nations have changed over the years, but for the most part, geographical locations remained the same. For instance, Persia became Iran in 1935 and the capital of Turkey is no longer Constantinople but is Istanbul today. Nevertheless, the people and geographical location remained almost completely unchanged.
So let’s take a look at some starting with Gog, the leader or ruler of the land of Magog. Now today, prophecy scholars are not in agreement about exactly where the word Gog originated, because there’s very little mention of it in the Bible or by historians. But what we do know is that Ezekiel tells us that he will be the leader or ruler (possibly dictator) of the land of Magog, to the north of Israel. And most prophecy scholars and historians believe Gog is the leader of present day Russia and the territories of the former USSR. And in Gen. 10, we see that Magog was the son of Japheth and grandson of Noah, and were identified by historians agogites or magogians. Furthermore, the Jewish historian Josephus wrote that they migrated north and were known as the Scythians, who settled to the far north of Israel, which is today called Russia. And we also know from Ezekiel 39:12 , that Gog and Magog will come from the “uttermost north” in the last days to attack Israel. And folks, if you draw a straight line from Israel directly north, take a guess what nation you’ll see? That’s right, it’s Russia! So almost all agree that Gog is the ruler and Magog is current day Russia or the territories of the former USSR.
Now folks, let me give you my personal list of the other nations in Ezekiel 38:1-6 and my best interpretation, based on a careful study of the historical and biblical record and much prayer. I’ve listed them with their Old Testament names first, followed by their modern day names:
*Gog=leader of Russia / Magog= nation of Russia & former USSR territories
*Persia= Iran / Cush= Ethiopia(Sudan) / Put= Libya / Meshech & Tubal= many believe these are the cities of Moscow and Tubolsk in Russia (but some say they are in Turkey)
*Gomer and Beth-togormah= Turkey (some say Gomer is Germany)
*Sheba and Dedan=Saudia Arabia and countries of the Arabian Peninsula friendly to Israel
*Merchants of Tarshish and all their young lions= Great Britain and possible reference to USA
I want to add this special note here: because some of you have asked me an important question: where is America mentioned in the Gog of Magog War? Indeed, where is America mentioned at all in end times prophecy? And sadly, my answer is that I can’t find America mentioned anywhere except possibly in Ezekiel 38:13, where he refers to “Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all their young lions”. And If that is the case, then I believe America, the greatest nation the world has ever known, has been reduced to a mere bystander and only able to offer a rather weak protest of the invasion of Israel by this Russian and Muslim alliance! And folks, I’ll have much more to say in regards to this important and relevant question very soon in a blog or podcast.
But friends, listen, we all know that only God can predict the future with certainty! However, what we do know for sure from scripture, is that a powerful nation from the “uttermost north”, with an alliance of nations (most likely Muslim), will attack Israel after they have returned from exile among the nations of the world ( that happened on May 14, 1948 ). And we know from both the prophets Ezekiel and Daniel that this great war will occur in the “latter days” or last days, before the 2nd coming of Christ, at the end of the Tribulation! And if we are seeing signs today that the Tribulation is near(and we are!), then how much closer is the return of Christ for His Bride, the Church?
So friends, there’s so much more I could say about this coming Gog OF Magog War, but for now I hope you see that Ezekiel links it with the restoration of Israel, and that many old testament prophets, as well as the Lord Jesus, linked it to His imminent return! And friends, as I said when we first began; for the 1st time in 2,600 yrs, we now see the Gog of Magog alliance coming together today and you can watch it happening on the evening news! But our great God has promised Israel, and all of His people, a glorious future. And friends, one day soon the whole world will stand in awe and marvel when the Lord completely destroys the invading armies and miraculously saves His people from certain defeat, just as He promised over 2,600 yrs ago!
